This class blurs the line between Printmaking, traditionally on paper, and Stoneware Clay surface design by including traditional terms and methods with high-fire mediums.

If you're stuck in a rut with your clay work and want to break out, learn some basic handbuilding techniques, and get exposure to 6 new types of pottery surface design in just a few weeks, reserve your space!  No wheel-throwing experience required.
Your instructors, Keren Brown & Pam Main, will cover the following topics, their specific tools, and application on stoneware clay surfaces:
  • Silk screen printing and high-fire mediums
  • Resists & uses while creating transfer prints
  • Embossing textural designs on slump and drape mold pieces
  • Block printing: creating custom stamps & applique

FEE: $220 covers 25 lbs of free stoneware clay, a sample silk screen design for use, your custom-carved impression and embossed printing blocks, use of all tools and printing mediums, and up to 40 firings for printed clay projects created in class (1st and/or 2nd firings). 8-20 unique works per student will be created in this workshop.

CLASS TIME:  This is a two-session, two-hour workshop with a week between to allow for drying time. Two hours of open-studio are included after the class to continue work, as well as a studio pass to use during the week between workshop dates. Click the pull-down tab to view all available workshop dates.

SKILL LEVEL: No prior experience with pottery or wheel throwing necessary: all printing on clay methods can be applied to beginning through advanced work.

STUDENTS BRING: Nothing is required, and all materials provided within the class fee. If desired, bring any pre-fired bisque pieces that can be second-fired to cone 6 (high fire) for testing prints in class. Test pieces are provided with registration, and are the only pieces that qualify for the free-firing of up to 5 pieces. Additional works require our low-cost firing fees.
