The use of barkcloth, made of the inner bark of certain trees, is widespread. One of the most varied and richest expressions in the fabrication and design of bark cloth was that found in Hawai'i. Kapa, the general Hawaiian term for bark cloth, was used primarily for sleeping coverings and clothing, while other types were used for clothing. This booklet describes and shows color illustrations of this utilitarian art form.
